Custer State Park

Custer State Park is a 71,000 acre park with spectacular terrain and an abundance of wildlife, all within minutes of HMWE. The Park boasts several scenic drives that explore the diversity of the area, from the granite spires of Needles Highway to the elk along wildlife Loop Road.

Wind Cave National Park

This park contains one of the world’s longest and most complex caves, plus 28,295 acres of mixed-grass prairie and ponderosa pine forest. The park’s mixed-grass prairie is one of the few remaining and is home to native wildlife such as bison, elk, pronghorn, mule deer, coyotes, and mountain lions.

The Mickelson Trail

The Mickelson Trail is a 100 mile recreational trail that stretches the entire length of the Black Hills. HMWE is 3.5 miles from the trail at about the midway point of the route.

The Black Hills have more than one million public acres to play in. An extensive trail system has been established that literally encompasses thousands of miles of trails for hiking, biking, off-roading, and more.

Deadwood

A short trek north on Hwy 385 will lead you right into one of the most colorful gambling towns in the West. The little burg is booming with activities including fine-dining, concerts, and gambling. The town is also a hub for activities such as biking, snowmobiling, skiing, or hiking.

Terry Peak

Just up the road from Deadwood, Terry Peak is one of the best kept secrets in snow skiing and mountain biking. Terry Peak is an uncrowded ski area with five lifts that serve the mountain, including two high-speed quads. In the summer the area opens its chairlift and its slopes for mountain bikers.

Mystic Miner Mountain Resort

Mystic Miner is geographically situated to receive the most natural powder in the black hills. The snow is great and the slopes are uncrowded. Mystic is a great place to learn to ski with the wide open terrain with no worries of being lost in the crowd.

World-Class Snowmobiling

Just a short drive to the northwest, you will have season long access to an extensive snowmobile trail system. The trails are groomed, serviced by numerous lodges, and cover hundreds of miles in two states.

Sheridan, Pactola and Deerfield Lakes

Sheridan
You can be on the beach or have your boat in the water in 15 minutes. This beautiful Black Hills lake is just a short drive from HMWE, and offers boating, skiing, and fishing opportunities.

Pactola
A dam on Rapid Creek has created this spectacular, deep-water lake about 20 minutes up Hwy 385. It’s surrounded by forest and offers boating, skiing, and fishing opportunities.

Deerfield
This lake is higher in elevation and provides great fishing opportunities. In the winter this area provides access to hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails and great ice fishing.

Mt. Rushmore National Monument

Mt. Rushmore sits in the middle of a granite spire filled National Park, surrounded by a National Forest with unparalleled hiking and access to the wilderness.
